I was having lunch with Amanda, Ted and Lisa today when Tiste texted me to let me know he was going to meet us. I didn't think too much of it since he had said he might take the day or half a day off. Although, when I got there he looked a little apprehensive.
Sadly, the Co-District Manager got a call last night that his store will closing in April. They called a meeting this morning to tell people; Tiste was included in the meeting. Thankfully the Co-District Manager, Arthur, is the Store Manager at the KMart on Military Hwy and used to work with Tiste at the store that's closing. Tiste was able to talk to him about possibilities for transfers, unemployment, etc.
As it turns out, if he stays at his current store until the day it closes then...
1) He will still be eligible for a transfer to another store provided there are openings after his store closes, or
2) He will collect salary weekly times the number of years he has been with the company (which would be 8 weeks) if he can not transfer to another store and
3) He will be able to file for unemployment after the 8 weeks if he is unable to find a job and the company will not contest it.
Worst case scenario is that he works at the current store until April and will have two months pay until unemployment kicks for approximately 18 weeks (their standard or average as I'm told) at approximately $245 a week (based on the 2008 benefit table). This means he would approximately have until October.
I've also heard rumor that unemployment collected this year will not be taxed by the state or Federal as part of the stimulus package. What I've found actually states:
Unemployment: The first $2,400 in unemployment benefits will be exempt from federal income taxes in 2009. The bill extends benefits by at least 20 weeks and temporarily increases weekly benefits by $25.
So, we'll see. In the meantime, baby plans are most likely being put on hold (it would be the smart thing to do) and I'm day dreaming about selling the house, moving to the farm, working 'from home' there for YAV and with/for the parents and having a baby (don't be scared Mom, it's not likely).

It's not all gloom & doom. In fact, it may be premature to assume anything at this point. The store doesn't close for another 2 months, which means h has that much time to 1)work on his resume, 2) put out feelers to other store to find out what their situations are, 3) he's still going to be pulling in a paycheck for quite a while, more than enough time for him (provided he starts now) to find a better job or position within the company.
So, yes take a day or two to be angry/sad/frustrated/etc..., but know that this is temporary! If worse comes to worse, you can pimp him out and make the big $$$ ;-)
